Safe-Tcl is a mechanism for controlling the execution of programs written in the Tcl scripting language (Tool Command Language, pronounced “tickle”). It allows untrusted scripts (applets) to be executed while preventing damage to the environment or leakage of private information. Safe-Tcl uses a p added cell approach: each applet is isolated in a “safe interpreter” where it cannot interact directly with the rest of the application. The execution environment of the safe interpreter is controlled by trusted scripts running in a “master interpreter.” Safe-Tcl provides an “alias” mechanism that allows applets to request services from the master interpreter in a controlled fashion. Safe-Tcl allows a variety of security policies to be implemented even within a single application, and it supports both policies that authenticate incoming scripts and those that do not.

If your wondering that on earth is TCL, well…

Tcl is a programmable, extensible and distributed language. It includes several dozen commands that run Unix utilities and provide file services and if-then-else-style control structures. It exists as a library of C code that can be embedded in applications; those Tcl-enhanced applications can use it to communicate with each other while they are executing (as opposed to invoking applications serially and piping inputs and outputs, as Unix shell scripts do). With Tcl it becomes possible for a script written in a single language to communicate simultaneously with several applications and–make them work together.

Thus, Tcl offers developers more granularity of control than traditional shell scripts. It’s also easier to write Tcl scripts than to mess with Unix primitives; the resulting scripts are also more portable than conventional shell scripts (though mostly within Unix environments so far).

Now for the script side..

The SafeTcl script provides a public Tcl command interpreter that everybody can use. It runs the Tcl commands in a tweaked safe interpreter to avoid any exploits.

I came to know about Safetcl`s script on freenode, #egghelp few months back. Since then the script/bot was pretty helpful and resourceful when ever I meddled around with TCL. Its easy to install, not much configuration to set, however it will only run on TCL 8.5 (and above), if im not mistaken.

This bot can be found on the channel (#qbot, ircqnet). So, if your having a bad day with TCL, just drop by. Its open to anyone and everyone.

After putting much effort in thinking (hard and smart)… we finally came to a decision that we will provide a simple qstats. I`ve looked at some gameserver stats scripts, but sad part is that most scripts are written in Perl programming language, including its modules. Thats something we can`t run on the box.

However, I managed to find this qstats script. The script will query gameservers using the qstat program to display server status and players using’pub_cmd’ commands.

More details later.
